What is Reiki?
The practice of Reiki is an original method of healing, developed by Mikao Usui in Japan early in the 20th century, which is activated by intention. Reiki’s natural healing energy works on every level, not just the physical, and promotes the body’s regenerative self healing ability.
The Japanese word Reiki means ‘Universal Energy’. Eastern medicine has always recognised and worked with this energy, which flows through all living things and is vital to well-being. Known as ‘ki’ in Japan, ‘chi’ in China and ‘prana’ in India. Acupuncture, T’ai chi and Yoga are also based on the free-flow of this energy in a person.
Reiki is a non-invasive therapy whose purpose is to treat holistically and to restore homeostasis. Reiki is being used in various settings including private practice, complementary therapy centres, GP surgeries, hospitals, hospices, cancer support groups, post-operative recovery, drug rehabilitation, prisons, HIV/AIDS centres, and in the care of the elderly.
There are several variations of the wording of the principles which Dr Usui wrote. This is the version I have been taught to use:
Just for today, do not anger Just for today, do not worry Honour your teachers, parents and elders Show gratitude toward all living things |

What Happens During A Session?
Reiki is a particular frequency of Universal energy channeled by a Practitioner to rebalance the recipient’s energy fields to help in the prevention of illness, disease, anxiety and crisis.
This energy works with the underlying cause of a problem which can result in quicker more effective healing. The energy can encourage healing by flowing to wherever needed in the body and aura to help you. The rate of healing will be depend on the focus of Practitioner and client and on their receptiveness to the energy and accepting change. A treatment may result in emotional release, quickening of physical healing, release of tension, reduction in pain, increase in personal energy and a sense of deep relaxation.
Reiki activates the body's natural ability to heal itself - the energy will go to where the origin of the illness is and works wherever it is most needed, releasing blocked energy, assisting in the cleansing of toxins in the body and helping to create a sense of balance.
It helps the recipient make lifestyle and attitude changes to promote a happier and healthier life.
Whilst certainly no substitute for orthodox medicine it can work extremely effectively alongside the treatments provided by your doctor or consultant.
Reiki is a simple, non-intrusive and powerful method of treating others. It is simple because it requires no elaborate or difficult techniques, it is non-intrusive as the recipient does not need to remove any clothing and no pressure is applied to the body (until the end of the treatment when light weeping actions on the back of the client are used). It is powerful because it goes to the deeper levels of the recipient's being, where many illnesses originate. All that is required is for the recipient to want to receive the treatment and to be open to the powers of Reiki and for the practitioner to want to channel the Reiki to the recipients good.
