Holistic health is essentially supportive, caring, and non-invasive. It is fundamentally vitalistic in nature. That is, holistic medicine accepts the importance of vital energy and the inherent healing ability of the body. It strives to restore bodily harmony by supporting the production of vital energy and supporting normal body processes such as elimination, adaptation and nutrition.
The word ‘holistic’ is derived from the word ‘whole’. The holistic approach to health differs from the conventional medical approach in that it takes into account the whole person rather than just focusing on the symptom or the part of the body which has the problem.
Holistic Therapists believe that your well-being depends on the balance and flow of energy through your body and that your mind and body are totally connected. Holistic therapies help the patient restore the balance, thus allowing the body to heal itself naturally.
Viewed in this way, even the earliest signs of ill-health become a valuable messenger. They let us know when we have lost our balance and that we will need to make some adjustments if we are to regain our health. If we ignore or just suppress the message then we can expect bigger health problems later on. |
