What is a Holistic Treatment?

Why Should I have a Holistic Treatment?

A holistic treatment is a completely relaxing treatment for the whole body.  During the treatment you have requested, I will incorporate the use of aromatherapy oils, candles, lighting and relaxing music to enable you to completely “switch off” your mind to your every day stresses and problems.  This will give your mind, body and spirit a chance to regain some calmness and revitalization.

Is there any reason why I can’t have a treatment?

Is there any reason why I can’t have a treatment?

Yes. Contra-indications to massage and most holistic treatments include recent surgery or major injury, high or low blood pressure, diabetes, any kind of heart condition, a history of thrombosis or embolism, or if you are suffering from cancer or osteoporosis.  All these conditions will require written doctors permission before a treatment can be carried out.

For Hopi Ear Candle Therapy a treatment can not be carried out if grommets are fitted, if you have a perforated ear drum or a current ear infection.
Reiki is a non-invasive treatment and can be carried out regardless of your medical condition.

If you are in your first trimester of pregnancy, it is advisable not to have any holistic treatments.

If you have any doubts at all about your suitability for treatment, please contact me on the number listed and I will be only too pleased to advise you.  I can also arrange to contact your GP or Consultant on your behalf, should you wish me to do so.

What exactly is Stress?

Stress related illnesses at present costs the British Industry billions of pounds each year.  We all make time to visit the dentist to check our teeth, to visit the opticians to check our eye sight, but how often do we give our bodies the same attention without actually being ill first?  The release of stress from our bodies has a direct impact on the functioning of our lymphatic, cardio-vascular, muscular, skeletal and nervous systems.  A holistic massage or any other holistic treatment once every few weeks, can help prevent the build up of stress in our bodies, eliminating toxins, releasing tensions and enabling us to deal better with the challenges of our day to day lives.

There is no doubt that stress in the workplace has increased. The facts speak for themselves: “Stress in the workplace may be costing businesses £12 billion a year” -The Health Education Authority 1999

“Stress is likely to become one of the most significant risks to businesses and employers in the short term” says a big insurance company quoted in a recent survey. British Safety Council 1999

“A survey of more than 300 organisations showed that one in five companies, with more than 1,000 staff, described stress as a major problem”- Gee Publishing 1999

“30 times more working days were lost as a result of stress-related mental illness than industrial disputes” - C.B.I 1995

“80 million workdays are lost each year through emotional difficulties” - Department of Health

“70% of GP visits are for stress-related complaints” - International Stress Management Association

“Two thirds of trade-union health and safety officers said stress was their biggest concern” when surveyed by the TUC in 1996. The TUC is currently quoting 470 union-backed cases related to stress currently being pursued.

Stress in other areas of our lives, through relationships, friendships, families and money worries, can all take their toll on our well-being, happiness and general health.
By taking the time out of your busy lives and receiving a relaxing, therapeutic massage once every few weeks could be of huge benefit to your long term health and well being by relieving the symptoms of the build up of stress on our bodies.

I take a holistic approach to your health and well-being. This means that the body, mind and spirit are seen as a whole, rather than treating only the symptoms of a disorder. The aim is to help to re-balance the whole person to a state of homeostasis, the natural balance of mind, body and spirit.

Where it all began...

I am a happily married mum with three children aged 7, 12 and 16 so I understand the stresses and strains that trying to combine work and family (and all the other pressures we put ourselves under) has on our state of health and well being.  Several years ago I began having some health problems of my own and I looked to complementary therapies as a way of reducing stress and improving my general health. What I acquired through my personal experiences was the inspiration to enter the field of holistic therapies myself.  I wanted the skills and knowledge to make others feel as fantastic as I felt after I had received a holistic treatment.  I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to follow this dream.

My journey on the path of holistic therapies began 4 years ago with my love of Reiki and when I received my Reiki I attunement.  Since then I have acquired high grade qualifications in Advanced Massage, Holistic Therapies, Indian Head Massage, Hopi Ear Candle Therapy, Advanced Reiki Practitioner, Hot Stones Therapy and Priadara Thai Style Massage.  I have also been professionally trained in Manicure, Pedicure, Spray Tanning (St.Tropez trained), Hollywood Toes and Waxing treatments.

I am also still studying.  My next qualifications are to be in Counseling and Reflexology. Being a member of the professional body’s is very important to me.  It means you have my assurance that I will continue to train in the field of Holistic Therapies to ensure the treatment you receive will be continually up-to-date, carried out professionally and with care.

I pride myself on both the professional care given during your treatment and follow-up care given to my clients after your treatment.  If I can help you in any way I will, just ask.  Prior to your first treatment you will be asked to complete a health and lifestyle questionnaire.  This will help me to recommend future therapies and also to help me when assessing your general well being prior to and during the treatments. All information received is strictly confidential and for my eyes only.  I believe that holistic therapies can be used alongside traditional western medicine, to assist healing, reduce stress and improve general well-being. Health should be looked at from a preventative, rather than a solely curative viewpoint, and holistic treatments should become part of our daily lives as much as a dentist checkup, eye sight checkup or even a colour treatment at the hairdressers! Massage especially should be seen as a necessity to our lives rather than just a treat that we feel we cannot really afford.  Our health and well being should be more important to us than that!

Keeping the body in balance, or homeostasis, will help keep us healthy and enable us to deal with the stresses and strains of modern life. We should also try to look for the root cause of any problems rather than simply alleviating or suppressing symptoms.
I look forward to meeting you soon. Holistic THERAPY
With kind regards,
Karen Wakefield x
