Waxing

Waxing is an excellent way to deal with most hair removal. Waxing leaves the area smoother than shaving does because it pulls the hair out from below the top layer of skin. This is the easiest and most convenient way to go about removing hair from large areas.

With hot waxing, a thin layer of heated wax is applied to the skin in the direction of the hair growth. The hair becomes embedded in the wax as it cools. The wax is then pulled off quickly in the opposite direction of the hair growth, taking the hair with it.If there are stray hairs after waxing, the therapist may also tweeze the area. The key to allowing wax to penetrate into the follicles (and provide the closest possible wax) is to relax. And many women claim the treatment is not nearly as painful as it sounds.

A good wax treatment however is not always down to the professionalism of your therapist, it is also dependent on at what stage your hair growth is at when the treatment takes place.  The following information may help to explain this:

Stages of Hair Growth Stages
AnagenAnagen (Figure 1): This is the "perfect" stage for treatment. The hair is grown and it is visible above the skin and can be treated. The hair shaft is attached to the papilla, thus enabling the wax to attach to the hair in the shaft and disable the papilla. Hair taken at this stage will have the ‘bulb’ attached to it and will take a lot longer to grow back, if it actually grows back at all.

CatagenCatagen (Figure 2): The "perfect" stage for treatment has passed. The growth process has reversed itself and the hair is getting ready to shed. The hair has broken away from the root and another hair has already began to grow behind this one underneath the skin surface. This is the area where hair growth can be felt again quite soon after a waxing treatment has taken place due to the hair growth underneath the skin.

Telogen (Figure 3): This is the final stage, the "resting" stage. The hair is neither developing nor growing. But hair growth will be definitely back in this area.
